In the beginning of 2016, I started with seizures that were deemed Psychogenic Non-epileptic seizures - simply put - no one knew what was really going on. Over the course of many hospital visits, the doctors tried to convince me that I had depression and/or anxiety. At one point, they tried pointing the finger at my parents and possible problems at home. Then there was the suggestion of schizophrenia or maybe even having a brain tumour. The MRI proved them wrong though. Bi-polar disorder was another option...to put things bluntly; I was supposed to address my issues rather sooner than later otherwise I would spiral down into alcoholism and drug abuse. Pretty heavy going for a 16 year old that was going through something that I didn't even understand myself in the beginning.
Thank God, my mum knew deep down that I wasn't going crazy so we went down the alternative route and learned that my nervous system is highly sensitised and the seizures are a response to an overload.
Having a supportive environment at home, really helped me ground myself and kept me happy. This led me to believe, that if I didn't have love and support as well as the right tools, I wouldn't be here today. Thus making me want to create a space where youth can come and experience just that.
